2024 Kitchen Design: Embracing the Latest Trends and Innovations
The kitchen undoubtedly has the most foot traffic in your home, so it deserves a makeover. When planning your new kitchen, it is important that the design aligns with your personal style while also following some of the current trends defining the kitchen world. The 2024 Kitchen Trends Report by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) has dropped, and I have curated seven design trends expected for 2024. Keep reading for a deep dive into kitchen design trends.
Kitchen Design Trend #1: Island Changes
There has been a significant change in kitchen island trends, with more current island builds leaning towards more communal and intimate seating arrangements. People want to be more social and conversational in their kitchens, and this is seen with the island layout, where people can face each other rather than the kitchen. Another kitchen design change has been an increase in combination islands, with over half of the kitchen islands having some closed storage feature underneath.
Kitchen Design Trend #2: Glamorous Lighting Choices
There has been a shift from understated kitchen design to a bigger and bolder design trend. Lighting has been a big part of this trend, with oversized and opulent light fixtures serving as statement pieces. Expect to see more dramatic pieces that set the tone for the kitchen and infuse the space with personality and style. See my recent article for more information about choosing the perfect kitchen lighting.
Kitchen Design Trend #3: Bold Color
Another way modern kitchen design is embracing a bolder approach is through color. White kitchens are commonly replaced with brighter paint colors, wallpaper, and unique backsplashes. Touches of color can even be added through appliances, lighting, and kitchen fixtures. Green is one of the top kitchen colors of 2024, as it is easy to incorporate and works well with many materials. Benjamin Moore’s Fernwood Green, Lush, and Aegean Teal are just three suggested colors to elevate your kitchen.
Kitchen Design Trend #4: Embracing Warmth
In another departure from white cabinetry, there has been a resurgence of natural and warm wood tones in this year’s kitchen design. Embracing the organic and warm woods can evoke comfort, charm, and nostalgia while adding depth to your space. See how we balanced dark blue cabinets in this recent project by incorporating rye-colored wood and gold finishes to warm the space and make it more welcoming.
Kitchen Design Trend #5: Designated and Elevated Beverage Bar
One of the biggest kitchen design trends in the NKBA report shows an increase in designated beverage areas, with storage focused on beverages in refrigerators and pantries. Suit your space to your morning lifestyle and show off your coffeemaker by creating a beverage station in your kitchen. Undercounter refrigerators can be a great addition to this space as this nontraditional appliance is rising in popularity.
Kitchen Design Trend #6: Trending Tile
There is expected to be an expanded use of tiles in kitchen design as patterned tiles and colorful tiles will get more use. Fully tiled kitchens reminiscent of traditional sculleries, especially when paired with Zellige tile, can be a way for kitchens to inject personality and drama. Even incorporating tile into the vent hood can help create a polished look. While it can be challenging to know where to begin when choosing tile for the interior of your home, see our article Things to Consider when Choosing Tile to help simplify the process.
Kitchen Design Trend #7: Diverse Range Hoods
In 2024, kitchen design is expected to experiment with range hood designs using mixed materials such as tile, stainless steel, wood, and more to add drama and interest to the space. Mixing metals is already a popular choice, but mixing metals with your range hood can create a vintage feeling of warmth and add personal flair.
