Tips to Make Your Home Feel More Polished and Finished
Several years after a major renovation, many of my clients feel like it may be time for another redesign. However, often, all your home needs is a bit of TLC to keep it fresh and updated. You may find that, after giving certain areas of your home a bit of special attention, you are no longer craving a complete overhaul. And you may never know; you might find yourself falling for your home all over again. Here are some simple tips to follow:
Let There be Light
An easy trick to making your home look more polished is by incorporating unique and interesting light fixtures. Think of lighting as not only a necessity but also a way to accessorize your space. Look for fixtures with an interesting shape, design, or finish. Also, consider the type of light bulb you use. Some LED bulbs give off a blue-tinged light that can make a home feel cold. Make sure the bulbs your using have a color temperature of 2700k, the higher the number, the bluer the tint.
Less is More
When it comes to making your home look more put together, minimalism is key. Keep furniture and accessories to items that you need versus items that you want in a room. However, don’t go overboard; it is important to customize the space and add accessories with small pieces like coffee table books and artwork to make the space yours.
Comfortable & Cozy
You can create a comfortable and stylish tone in your home simply by adding a few throw pillows and a beautiful blanket in your seating area. Added bonus; these items can be easily swapped out to set a special tone for changing seasons and holidays.
Hanging Around
Hanging curtains near the ceiling will create a luxurious and upscale look in your home. Long curtains will give an illusion that your room is larger. In addition, by making the curtain rod extend past the width of the window (so that just an inch or so of the curtain hits the window itself) you can make the window appear larger and increase the amount of light coming in the window.
Don’t Forget to Look Down
Area rugs add color and character to your home. They can make a space feel cozy and inviting as well as adding the final touch to pull the room together. It is important to make sure that the size of your rug is proportional to the space you are using it in; too small a rug will make your space feel smaller (and less expensive) than it really is. Also, when placing furniture on top of the rug, please remember to leave enough space for the piece being used; for example, the area rug should extend at least 2 feet behind dining room chairs.
This is by no means a comprehensive list of suggestions. Please feel free to contact us if you have any specific questions about how to make your home more polished and finished.
