Lighting is one of the most essential elements in a home. With the simple flick of a switch, lighting can highlight a treasured item or favorite color. It also has the ability to affect mood and overall health. Even in a home with abundant natural light, artificial light can shine brightly. Here are some essential tips (thanks to our friends at Circa Lighting) to install lighting throughout your home.

CEILING LIGHTING

Over a Kitchen Island:

It is recommended to install ceiling fixtures 30 to 36 inches from the surface of the kitchen island. When installing multiple fixtures, the widest part of the fixtures should be spaced a minimum of 30 inches apart for optimal airflow, light spread, and visibility.

In an Entry or Hallway:

Light fixtures should comfortably clear the thresholds of any adjacent doors and, most importantly, the heads of all family members! Leave a minimum of 7 feet from the floor to the bottom of the fixture and 4 feet from the widest part of the fixture to any surrounding wall.

WALL LIGHTING

Above a Bathroom Mirror:

The ideal linear bath light will measure at least 3/4 the width of the mirror without exceeding its edges. For larger mirrors, consider mounting a pair of evenly-spaced linear sconces.

In a Hallway or Living Space:

When installing multiple wall sconces to accent a hallway, dining room, or other living space, consider leaving a minimum of 8 to 10 inches between each fixture for a balanced spread of light.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Two Lights Beside an Exterior Door:

When mounting exterior wall lights beside a door, position the fixtures at eye level or 60 to 65 inches from the ground. For the best spread of light, the fixture should measure at least 1/4 the height of the door.

One Light Beside an Exterior Door:

Position the light fixture on the same side as the doorknob in order to see your visitors’ faces when opening the door at night. Mount the center of the fixture at eye level, or 60 to 65 inches from the ground.
