Dreaming of Your Vacation Home

Are you considering buying a luxury vacation property in 2019? You are not alone; according to a recent article in Forbes, 2019 may be the year to invest in a luxury vacation home. Stephanie Anton, president of Chicago-based Luxury Portfolio International, agrees. “We are seeing sales up in the resort areas, including Hawaii and Vail. Florida’s luxury market in Sarasota did very well last year” says Anton. “People are now so exhausted by today’s world, they are looking at vacation homes as total retreats to shut everything out.”

Many of these properties require renovations and updates to reach their full potential. Here are some trends we are seeing this season in vacation home design:

Additional Spaces
For many years, there has been a focus on indoor/outdoor living in interior design. This trend takes that style of living one step further. By investing in a disconnected building, often referred to as an accessory dwelling unit or ADU, homeowners can preserve the style of their main home while increasing their living space. The ADU can be used as an additional gathering space, sleeping quarters, or an office/artist studio.

Comfort and Warmth
Sophisticated, elegant comfort is the trend this season. Vacation homeowners are painting walls in warm, neutral colors and investing in antique wood furniture. This incredibly warm and inviting atmosphere can be enjoyed for years to come.

A Mix of Old and New
Floor plans and room configurations in vacation homes continue to learn toward open, flexible spaces. However, vacation homeowners are furnishing these rooms with warmth and richness (see above). People are also seeking a sense of healing and peace and asking for meditation rooms, home spas, and yoga spaces.

Over the past decade, I have had the good fortune of designing numerous luxury vacation spaces. If you would like to discuss your particular project, or if you have any general questions, please contact me today!
